Youth Bridge

♦ The Purpose

image The goal of Cornerstone's Youth Program is to help students (age 7 to 17 years old) assimilate into the mainstream Canadian education system. Our philosophy revolves around a simple 3step progression: EXPOSURE leading to FAMILIARITY fuelling CONFIDENCE. We begin by exposing students to the teaching methods and courses taught at Canadian schools in an ESL context. We immerse students in the language, customs, and subject matters offered in Canadian public and private schools helping to acquaint them with the mainstream program. Academic disciplines such as Canadian History, Geography, Literature, Math and Science are highlighted in our international program. Through quality education and individualized attention, our students gain the confidence necessary to integrate into the Canadian classrooms.

♦ Who may enroll in Youth Bridge:

  • Children planning to attending a Canadian school
  • International students looking for a smooth transition into the Canadian educational system
  • Children from overseas who come to study English with their parents

With the influx of international students coming into Toronto, English immersion is a necessity to a child’s success in an Englishspeaking country. Our program offers more than just ESL as it teaches students in the same disciplines as Toronto public schools.

♦ The Program

Our program has two main divisions, Integrated ESL in the morning and Core Subjects in the afternoon. Grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking skills are allotted specific times for instruction. Textbooks, reading books, writing journals, videos, audios and other materials are used during instruction to address the specific ESL skill. Our instructors are specialists in teaching English to children and teenagers, they are not adult ESL instructors; teachers organize a variety of activities and give students many opportunities to speak English in class.

In the afternoon, Core Subjects are addressed within an ESL context. In many instances, actual textbooks required by the Canadian education system are used for instruction. Afternoon classes are dynamic with group projects, presentations and experiments leading the way in our activitybased program.

In addition to our classroom instruction, we foster assimilation through frequent field trips. From the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario to the Ontario Science Centre and so much more, we take advantage of the rich learning centers and cultural festivities the city of Toronto has to offer.

♦ The Personal Touch

We are committed to the success of every student. Each student receives an academic evaluation and individual counselling regarding admissions to, and studies in Canadian schools. We take our young learners and their guardians to visit the schools and assist in the admissions process.

♦ Subjects covered include:

• English • Math • Science • History • Art & Music • Culture
